All about Jug Puppies

Jugs make adorable, loving companions and are great little family dogs with huge personalities. Find out more about them here.

What are Jugs?

A Jug is a cross between a Jack Russell and a Pug, so is not a purebred dog but a hybrid of the two breeds. They are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club and generally make wonderful family pets.

Temperament

Being individuals, with a mix of both Jack Russell and Pug characteristics, each Jug will have its own unique personality. You should expect some of the fearless Jack Russell qualities, with a need for lots of exercising and sometimes an obsession with digging. Some Jugs, like the Jack Russell breed, are very dominant and may suffer from ‘little dog syndrome’ where they feel that they are dominant over all other dogs (and humans for that matter). It is wise to instill in them the knowledge that you are the leader of the pack from a very early age. Typical Pug-like qualities you may notice in your Jug are sensitivity and a tendency to become jealous of other dogs (and children) in the home. An ideal combination of the two breeds will give you a Jug who has a fearless and protective nature, yet is highly sociable and easy to train due to the high intelligence of both breeds.

Appearance

Jugs, depending on their ‘mix’ percentages, tend to have puggish type faces that are flatter than normal Jack Russells, with pug-like ears and a short snout. They may have leaner Jack Russell type bodies and will usually carry a curly pug tail. Coloring varies (depending on the parents) but the most typical jugs are either various shades of caramel or black. They are very endearing to look at and their cuteness and charm always guarantees a good deal of attention when walking them.

Size

Jugs usually grow to between ten to fourteen inches in height and can weigh anywhere between ten to eighteen pounds (again depending on the ratio of crossbreeding and the size of the parents).

Life Expectancy

Jugs are generally very sturdy and healthy little dogs and will live between fourteen and twenty years if fed a healthy diet and exercised daily.

We have a jug, have her since she was 5 wks old....she's 1 1/2 now.....we LOVE her. She's the perfect mix, loves to play and sit on your lap ,even though she weighs about 25 lbs. She was a very fast learner. Our daughter received her as a birthday gift, but we all immediately fell in love with her. She thinks everyone & every dog is her friend.

I have an adorable 4 month Jug. She is being very hard to train. She rips everything apart, a destroyed my daughter's mattress, and a few other things. She is very loving though. I believe she has more Jack Russell in her than Pug. She is very smart and usually takes commands well. She just had her first puppy education class and had everyone fulled into believing she is an angel. I also have a male 8 month old Pug and he is excellent.

Adorable JUG 2 years ago

My husband and I adopted a 4-month-old jug (hybrid between a pug and a jack Russell terrier) and we named him Zorro. He is very playful and energetic but he also loves to cuddle. He is very smart and in less than 2 weeks he was potty trained. Zorro is adorable and always gets a lot of attention when we take him out. Thank you www.amishpups.com for all of you help. We could not be happier with Zorro.

I enjoyed your blog about JUGS, seems like you are very familiar with them.I just givn two of the most adorable JUGS. They are pretty good but having two is difficult o train. Its like having two rambunctious toddler boys on overdrive at times.LOL Hwever, I was hoping you may be able to give me some additional advice or point me in te right direction? I love my boys to death, They listen (ok, most of the tie) to me as I am the Alpha leader. But they tend to egg one another on. The one that resembles the pug more also has the personality of one, calmer, not as active, down to earth, walks great alongside, listen better. The Jack Russell terrier look alike take on the JRT personality, very high strong and needs to run more, does not listen well, takes him longer to learn, seems a bit like he has ADHD basically. How can I get them on an even pace? Is it possible? They suffer extreme seperation anxiety, and when they aretogether they chew thrre walls, chairs, bags, whatever they can. Seperate they do same but you can hear them egging eachother on or something. I just want to do the best I can for my family and my little guys.

Dear Ivy, you are so right when you say that having two Jugs is like "having two toddler boys on overdrive!" I would suggest, in the first instance, you take a look at http://hubpages.com/hub/how-to-train-a-puppy-train - it's a wonderfully comprehensive hub on puppy training and covers all aspects of early care. I wish you all the best and much happiness with your little sweethearts :-)

My Jug is 10 months old and he does not like cuddles anymore!!!!! he used to love sleeping on our laps but now needs his "space" and prefers to sleep on the floor at times than on the sofa with us!! has anyone else found this?? apart from that he is a little star, he is so funny and playful, he is good with children, very excitable all the time constantly wagging his tail!! Has the energy of a JRT but the attention seeking/sometimes jealous behaviour of a Pug but i would not change him for the world

Me and my girlfriend just got 2 Jug puppies and 9 weeks of age. One is a male and the other is a female. We named them Nellie And Yogi. They are just the cutest thing and get along great with eachother. They can never sleep unless their side by side to eachother or leaning their heads on my arm. The always want to be held and i find that so cute and fall right asleep as soon as they get on my lap. I havent started training them yet but i will soon i hope they are as smart as everyone says they are.

Our Jug is 1 yr. old and after a playful session out of the blue bite my daughter in the face. She required plastic surgery on her nose. My daughter is convinced that he was being ficious and we of course want to believe that he was playing. After the attack when she got up the dog still continued to chase after her and although did not bite her leg, was jumping on her trying to get at her face more. She is certain that if she laid still and didn't protect her face, he would have continued to chew at her??? We are not sure. He has growled and shown dissatisfaction towards her many times prior although the dog will go up to her climb on her lap and cuddle with her but only on his terms. Wondering if we should give this dog to a new owner.

Tricia 2 years ago

We just bought our Jug yesterday! Her name is Izzabella or Izzy as we like to call her. She just turned 3months yesterday. Were working hard on potty trainging her already. Shes very sweet and loving..most deff a lap dog. Im a little nervous that the Jack Rusell in her will take over. I just hope she stays very playfull but also very nice and calm like she has been for the past day. I cant wait to see her grow and learn lots of new things!!

Carolyn 2 years ago

My boyfriend have had a Jug for Two months now. We absolutely love her. She learned how to catch a little frizby and ball right away. She is super hyper when she is around children and other dogs, but cuddles when she isnt. She is definitely an alpha, and has been since we got her at eight weeks old. It has been very hard to potty train her. She knows to go to the slider and learned that very quick she will hit the curtains, but only does it when she wants to go outside, not necessarily when she needs to go to the restroom. I think this is do to her stubbornness. She loves water and will try and jump in the bath with me. She loves to chew, so my boyfriend are trying to be stern with her by shouting no and making a loud clap. We love our abbey, she is overall a great companion.

Sinéad 2 years ago

We bought a jug(Toby) about 7 months ago we absolutly love him.He is extremely intellegant, he has numerous different toys and when told to fetch these he knows them all. he chews everything but it's so easy to forgive him because he's sooooooooooooo cute! especially when you speak to him and he tilts his head to the side as if he can understand what you are saying.

Not until my father-in-law say a dog show on tv did it hit us what our dog Jack was mixed with! We knew for sure he wa Jack Russell, hense the name Jack, but we didn't know what else! After reading the information on the site and seeing numberous pictures... Jack is no doubt a Jug! Thank you for the information! It was very helpful! We love him and his personality so much! He makes me laugh everyday. I would definetly recommend one... and we only came apon him cause he needed a good home.

We have a jug that is 6 mos old. Abby is cute and loveable and very smart. She is hyperactive as a Jack Russell, but cute and cuddles well. Hope you all have fun with yours. We are tooo old to be starting with a new puppy, but it won't be long before she is an adult.

I got my Jug (named Honey) when he was 8 wks. old & he just turned 2 yrs. He was very easy to train & is so very smart! He has, however, just about chewed the house down, destroyed several pet beds & pairs of my shoes & my friends $475. glasses!! But...I love the little guy! His face is his meal ticket. I melt when he looks at me with his big brown eyes. (looks like he is wearing eye-liner). He lives to play fetch. If I could, I would get another one...no kidding...he is that sweet & adorable.

Ashley 2 years ago

Hello every one, I just got my Jug puppy at 7 weeks old. She is the cutiest little dog I have ever seen I love her so much. But I worried that she may not be able to walk, she is the runt of her litter and seems to be just learning how to walk with her back lags. Just woundering if any one has ever heard or seen this in a jug or any other dog??

Megan 2 years ago

I recently adopted a little Jug. His owner got him as a gift and didn't want him!! We fell in love with him immediantly he is smart and easy to train he was house broke immediantly as long as he is taken out. Yesterday he saved my daughters life! She is 16 months old and got out a door left open by one of my older children she was within ten feet of an aggressive Bulldog who lives behind us and our little jug was grabbing her dress and biting her legs until she cried, if he hadn't i would not have heard her and she could very well be laying in a hospital seriously injured. You can say that i will be keeping a bike chain on the door from now on and that our little Max will always have a special plavce in my heart if he didn't already!

Or any breeders ( i live in western ny)

Hi I have Jug, she is 9 months old and called Willow. She is the boss of our house, i have another dog called O'son who is an 8 stone cross breed ( Douge de bordeaux cross Rottweiler) and she rules him! They get on so well, they are both loveable socialable pets. Willow is the fastest dog in the neighbourhood, and wants to be friends with eveybody. Wouldn't and change my little and large pair for anything. :-)

Chris 21 months ago

We just got a Jug 2 1/2 weeks ago. She is now 3 months old. Her name is Macie, and she is just adorable. She has a lot of energy and the last few days she has been very stubborn with me. I take her out on a walk in the morning and evening. But the last couple of days she didn't want to walk. Just sat her butt down and did not move. She looks like a Pug but has an attitude like the JRT. She sits for her treats and toys, plays fetch - even brings it back to me. Shen still needs to learn her Name, the meaning of "NO" - she gets mad at me when I tell her no and she starts to bark & bite at me. Is this normal? How do I get her to stop? I tried walking away when she is not behaving (biting, chewing on me) - does not seem to work. I put her in the kitchen for a 'time out' - does not work, I don't know what to do. I don't want to get physical with her when she is in that mood, but what else can I do? I try to destract her with a toy when she uses my fingers/hands, but it doesn't always work. Is it to early for obidience school?

I'm looking at getting a Jug, he is apparently 1 year old. Any suggestions? Should I know anything first?

Do they have any common health issues?

bre 21 months ago

We got our jug about a month ago and she is doing well. She loves our laps and laying behind you for some reason lol. As i am typing this she is laying on my lap sleeping. She doesnt bite alot but occasionaly can get a little chewy. She does seem to find anything she can small. She loves to play with my other dog, a boxer beagle mix, they do get alittle wild though, especially while we eat dinner, which can get annoying. The only thing that is weird about her is that she is scared of the dark. Any advice on how to fix that?

We have a year old female jug named peanut. She is truly the best dog, she really cheered up my 11 year old last year when she was being picked on at school. My daughter has so much self confidence now just from the love my baby jug gives to my daughter. Peanut and my daughter are now finishing peanuts service dog training classes and are planning to visit terminal cancer patients. My daughter wants to share with others the love our peanut puppy gives everyday with others who need to have a happy day. We did notice she would love to have a puppy friend to play with: so for christmas peanut will be getting a 9 week old black male pug named pierre. thanks

Where can you go to buy a jug?

Kali 15 months ago

I've had my jug pup since last July. He was very difficult to house train. We have just got to where he won't mess in the house at night. Also we had to take him to the vet last October because of his eyes. He has cherry eye in both eyes. It looks weird but apparently it's normal for bug-eyed dogs or dogs with droopey eyes. The vet said it doesn't hurt or effect his vision. Unfortunatly he has to have surgery to get his eyes fixed and while we're there we will have him nuetured as well.

Other than his eye problems and the house training... he is a very loveable and playful pup. He is always so excited to see people though he is a great a watchdog. He never barks when it is either me or my boyfriend that is coming into the house but when it is anybody else he barks his little head off.

We don't have any kids yet but are expecting our first in August. I just hope my pup doesn't get jealous of the baby. :(

We have one male jug who will be 1 year in just a few days, his name is Riley. Hes very loveable and FULL of energy! Sometimes he nips, and we are having trouble with this, but its playful i think? However, still needs to stop. He also likes to jump on people. Any advice on those things would be great!

We love him so much that we went today and got him his own little jug friend. Dexter is 13 weeks old and reminds of exactly of Riley when he was that size with his energy level. However he wont go potty! Riley is more pug with a Jack personality and although we just met Dexter he seems to have more physical traits of a jack. And the same personality as Riley. They were great togethor. Riley is so happy to have a friend.

My Jug, Maggie turned 2 this summer. We got her when she was 4 months and she is just the most amazing dog ever. We are so lucky! She cuddles up with you, gives tons of kisses, oh and she can definately "feel" our emotions. Her personality is just amazing.

Funny story: She loves to lick my boyfriends ears and face. She does a "fake out" she will walk by him, pretend to look at something, like she is not paying attention to him and then runs back and starts licking him. Its the funniest thing! no idea where she picked that one up :)

Hello Fellow jug owners :)

I adopted a little Jug about a month ago. He is about 4 mths old now and his name is Thor. He is super smart but I haven't had a puppy in such a long time, I forgot how difficult it is to train them sometimes. He knows how to sit, lay down, shake, fetch, and chase his tail. However, this whole potty training thing is just not clicking with him also the crate training. Any tips? Maybe a bell on the door so he knows the ring it when he wants to go out? Any comments at all would be appreciated :)

My daughter and her boyfriend just got an 8 week old Jug named Karma. She is sweet, beautiful and loves to play. She is just starting to nibble and chew on people and things like chairs. They bought the bitter apple spray that is to keep cats and dogs away from certain furniture and wires, but get this She LIKES IT! She started licking it. So know they are trying the No with a tap on the nose and someone suggested spraying water in their face. She has been wonderful with peeing on the pee pads since she cannot go outside yet bc she has not gotten her first shots yet since her and two siblings have Kennel Cough and are being treated for 10 days. She will get her shots next Monday and then they will start with outside potty training. We "Grandpuppy" sat on Friday night and it was almost as nerve racking as if it were a real baby! We had to give her medicine and she was mad at me bc I was the one to make her take it. We have always had large dogs like German Shepards and our current dog is a Golden/Lab mix. But seeing Karma and how tiny she is and how cuddly, now I won't discriminate against the little dogs anymore. She is a great addition to our family!

I Love my jug Milo & ive had him 2 weeks this saturday, hes 6 month old but today when i took him to the vets he weighed 9.1kg. Although the vets all loved him & were completely cooing over him, they never mentioned whether 9.1kg for a jug pup is healthy or overweight? Can somebody help? I dont want him to be unhealthy! Especially because hes spoilt rotten & my new 2nd shadow & id be a lost puppy without him! Haha xx

My family got a female jug a few months ago. She is now 6 months. We absolutely love her! She was very easy to house break. Within the first weekend we brought her home she was completely potty trained. She loves other dogs, especially large dogs in the neighborhood and loves to go to the dog park. She did love to chew while teething and we found that giving her a bully stick satisfied her need to chew. I absolutely love my cute little jug and wouldn't replace her for anything.

Jack, our 2yr old Jug, is just wonderful! He is very entertaining as well as being a good companion for my 80 yr old father. Jack never tires of playing fetch or sitting on someones lap. He is all black with one white foot. He knows his toys by name and when asked will bring you the ball, squrille, frizebe, etc. He will also put them back into his "toy box" on comand. He is crate trained and when told "it's time for night, night" will run right to it. Recently Jack has started to growl and nip at strangers who try to pet him. This is a new behavior. He never growls at anyone he knows, but I am concerned he may bite someone. Any recommendations?

Hello. I love all the feedback about everyone's Jugs. I too have a jug named Drake. He is about 5 years old now. We also have a female full blooded(no papers) all black pug named Daisy. Three weeks ago, Daisy gave birth to 6 pups..three males, three females. They will be for sale in 3 more weeks. They are located in central Ohio. I will not travel to meet people other than the three counties I am near. If you are interested, please email me at luv2joke@gmail.com. This is not a scam, I am not asking for a single dollar up front...just getting the word out that in three weeks I will have jugs available( most of them are black or black and white..a couple have a uniique shade of black with and undercoat of brown)
